Perth, march 29, a whopping 33 degrees.
Hi all you Bruces and Sheilas,
Faithfull readers of this weblog may remember an entry I posted a while back about Disneyland Paris. It may be due to the beastly jetlag but Perth certainly reminds me of Disneyland. The architecture is eclectic and ornamented, the streets are neat and orderly, the parks carefully manicured and the trees neatly clipped. There is an abundance of public toilets and benches. Kids walk the street in neat uniforms and choreographed couples and elderly ladies pass by at frequent intervals. The belltower chimes happily every hour. And yes, the scene is predominantly white, with the occasional Gook, Abo or Hobnob. There is something very pleasant about it, a great deal of attention and budget is given to the public domain. It strikes me that perhaps this is what typifies western society, and what lacks in the Asian cities I have visited in the last few years. It is not so much the underlying politics, neither is it the distinction between overt capitalism and communism. The human touch perhaps, or…the influence of humanism on urban design. (what do you think Prof. Dr. Verstaaaaaaten?) it is all very civilized... the civil society…..and what’s wrong with a little love song? If Chinees city’s are John lennon, Perth certainly is Paul Mc Cartney.
